Once upon a time people went to work, cowered from their menacing boss, kept out of office politics (as they recall previous interactions with workplace bullies), avoided speaking up when they were overwhelmed and generally kept their heads down hoping to go under the radar. At the end of the day they stumbled home dragging a sack full of work stress behind them, despite promising loved ones they would leave it at the door. As a result of their 'less than pleasant' work environment, their home life mirrored their work stressors, their partners became tired of the 'same old stories', their good natured dogs pretended to be asleep rather than get caught up in the tension and for some reason (surely unrelated) they seemed to catch every cough and cold going around. Fortunately, taking a sick day was a much needed respite from the chaos and drama. These were unhappy and unproductive times indeed.
